The Women's Marathon has been a regular Olympic event at the Summer Games since 1984. The event has been won twice by athletes from Japan, Ethiopia, and Kenya, although Kenyan athletes have won the most medals in the Women's Marathon, with eight in total. During the Paris 2024 Olympics, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the gold medal while also setting a new Olympic record. Hassan's gold medal was the first medal in the event for her home country.
A small number of athletes have won multiple medals in the event, but nobody has won two or more gold medals. No athlete has ever been stripped of a medal in this event, although the 2016 gold medalist Jemima Sumdong failed a drug test less than twelve months after winning the gold in Rio, and is currently serving an eight year ban from international competitions (however, her victory in 2016 remains unaffected).

This data was collected using the official Olympic.org site, as well as a spreadsheet from the Guardian that includes data from 1896-2008 (available here), 2012 and 2016 data was compared with that from Encyclopaedia Britannica, and several news outlets were used to update the table when medals were reassigned (i.e. for doping offenses).
