Hailing from Houston, Texas, US, Hayes Carll (born January 9th, 1976) is an American singer-songwriter whose country folk bears similarities to the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Guy Clark.
Hayes Carll began learning guitar at the age of 15, playing along to the likes of Bob Dylan, John Prine and Kris Kristofferson. Swiftly, Carll began to write his own songs, taking inspiration from the Beat writers, such as John Kerouac, as well as “The Dead Poets Society,” displaying a maturity in his style. He began to focus on his music after graduating from Hendrix College, Arizona, US, in 1998, returning to Texas and playing his own songs at local bars. Having gathered a strong local following, Carll started attracting the attention of record labels, eventually signing to Compadre Records.
Carll’s debut album appeared soon after in 2002, releasing “Flowers and Liquor,” displaying a style reminiscent of fellow Texan troubadour Townes Van Zandt. Despite an offer of a deal from Sugar Hill Records, Carll then decided to form his own label, Highway 87 Records. With producer R.S. Field, Carll released his second release on his own label, “Little Rock,” in 2005, reaching the top spot on the Americana charts.
Following this success, Carll moved to Lost Highway Records in 2006. Two years later, his third album, “Trouble in Mind,” came out, featuring the hit song full of irony and wit, “She Left Me For Jesus,” co-written with Brian Keane. His second release for Lost Highway Records, “KMAG YOYO” (a military abbreviation for “Kiss My Ass Guys, You’re On Your Own), was released in 2011, reaching number 12 on the US Country Chart. That same year, Carll was nominated for ‘Artist of the Year’ at the 2011 Americana Music Association Awards. His single, “Another Like You,” was also named the number one song of 2011 on American Songwriter’s annual list.
Read moreHayes Carll plays a delightful brand of Americana, full of country blues stylings, with songs full of romp and vitality that sound as if they have come from a rural Texan barn. Which they likely have, hailing from Woodlands, Texas, a small place located near Houston. At The Shed, Maryville, Tennessee, he delivered a rousing performance, full of energy rumbling and growling through his set. His lyrics are of a true journeyman, with tales of rambling across the country that are compelling a listen. The musicianship is equally captivating, with a twanging guitars and bluesy slides that take you back to a small shed in rural Texas, with the sun just about to disappear. His music takes you places full of romanticism of a more simple, honest life. "One Bed, Two Girls, Three Bottles of Wine" is perhaps my favourite song by Hayes, with its raunchy, amusing lyrics and catchy chorus. It is certainly a song that will stick in your mind. Yet what really makes his performance is his stage presence, commanding complete attention right from the start through his entertaining stage presence. Hayes Carll is a true troubadour and a brilliant live act and I would definitely recommend.
Texan singer/songwriter Joshua Hayes Carll is about as American as they come having forged a career spanning fifteen years on a purely Americana/country sound. Unlike traditional country, it was not met instantly with chart success so Hayes had to work the live circuit the hard way and make his way up to larger stages and audiences.
With the success of his fourth album 'KMAG YOYO' it feels as though the artist has well and truly arrived when he steps out and greets the crowd gathered. His performance style remains relatively unchanged as he keeps the operation to a minimum in order to really thrust the music into the limelight. There are tracks from his previous album 'Trouble in Mind' featured this evening and the audience listens on intently to the material that may have passed them by. A particularly sincere rendition of 'Faulkner Street' goes over particularly well tonight. After performing over twenty tracks and educating his crowd on the entire discography, he finishes with a real crowd pleaser 'Hide Me' and a brisk thank you.
Anyone who doesn't go and see Hayes Carll in their lifetime is missing out on a true American experience. He is one of the nicest, funniest musicians and one of the greatest concerts we have ever seen. We will be trying to go to another concert before we head back to Australia. Hopefully Hayes will make it there someday :)
Take care. We look forward to hearing more of your great music and lyrics.

Awesome show in Kalamazoo this week! Wasn’t super familiar with Hayes, and he really was great. Awesome singer/songwriter with a great stage presence. Told many very funny stories. Was super appreciative of the audience. Just a really great show. Trust me I will be following Hayes and listening in the future. Look forward to the opportunity to see him live again. Definitely a 5 ***** star show!
I had a great time at this show. Hayes apologized for being a bit groggy after eating too much BBQ, but I really enjoyed the mellow, ballad-focused set. He's got such great stage presence, including lots of humor, and his bandmates are incredible musicians. Luke Bell was also an outstanding opener with a beautiful voice. Come back to SLC soon!
As always, Hayes Carll put on a great show! In addition to his rockin' classics, soulful ballads, and story bits, he brought his Mrs., Allison Moorer, out to sing a couple duets. I've been a fan of both for some time so it was wonderful to see him again, and to hear her beautiful voice live. Hope they both come back to Tucson again soon.
Waited a long time to see Hayes. He didn’t disappoint. Was warm funny, and engaging. His voice was perfect by Hayes standards. He has gained such a repertoire, that a lot of songs I expected were left out. Even still I loved his selections, they gelled well. Can’t wait to see him again.
Brilliant singer-songwriter. a true wordsmith. Could be a more handsome version of Ray Wiley Hubbard's little brother.
Band mates were quite young but enthusiastic. The Kessler was small and intimate. Great acoustics. Beer was cold. A great night.
Hayes Carll puts on exactly the show you would expect. He relates well to the audience, plays a great mix of music and all in all creates an atmosphere of pure entertainment.
I have seen him three times and look forward to the fourth.
Hayes Carll is one of my favorite singer/songwriters and this show did not disappoint! Except for the annoying chick up front I couldn't have asked for a better show!!! I can't wait for another Colorado show. Thanks Hayes!!!
