This venue--The Kessler Theatre in Dallas--is the coolest. Big enough, but still intimate.
Hadden Sayers opened, and was a 12 out of 10--great singer/songwriter/guitarist/bluesman. Then he switched from acoustic to electric guitar and played in Ruthie's band, doing some great guitar solos and backup singing, as well as a duet with Ruthie on a song he wrote. This guy is great, and is a perfect fit with Ruthie's show.
Ruthie was...well...Ruthie. It's impossible to put into words how awesome she is. I've heard her sing live probably 20 times, and she never fails to astonish. Her voice is unbelievable, and she really knows how to use it. Mostly it seems as though she just gets out of the way and lets her voice do its thing. If you've never heard her live, DO IT. Make it a bucket-list item. Oh, and besides her singing, she's a first rate guitar player (and piano too, although she rarely performs on keys). AND she's funny (as, BTW, is Hadden).
Britney puts on an amazing show. I was happy to find out That my high opinion of her is shared by such great and distinct music icons as Memphis Soul legend William Bell and Funk Goddess Meshell Ndegeocello. This is a test to her talent versatility and range. You'll be extremely rewarded to catch her live! Personally, I try to catch her show at every opportunity. Whether playing acoustic solo, we're back by one of the groups of very talented musicians and I have seen her perform with. She never disappoints anyway.
I have been going to see Ruthie Foster perform for about a decade now in venues from North Carolina to northern New Hampshire (also buying each of her CDs.) She just gets better and better. Her current band with Samantha on the drums and Larry on the bass is a great fit. Last night in Somerville Ruthie and her band were clearly enjoying the vibe from the audience. There is nothing better than great music when it moves the audience and then circles back to the performers. Keep on Ruthie!
Ruthie Foster is a force of nature. Hearing her sing is a breathtaking spiritual experience, not unlike watching a powerful and acrobatic bird in flight. She is blessed with an amazing vocal instrument which she wields with an easy grace that belies an uncanny skill. Added to that, she is warm and funny and utterly genuine.
There is truly no one like Ruthie Foster.
Ruthie ROCKED it out with her incredible Blues beauty, touching stories straight from the heart and not a soul in the house left untouched. She is the Blues Sister of our times and she blew Sycamore Creek away last night!
Ruthie was magical, as always and it was fun to see her with a big band. She has such a great relationship with her audience and this event was fantastic. Huge fan! We love Ruthie!
