The film is based on research published in the SIPRI report Humanitarian Protection in the Liptako-Gourma Region (2020–2022): Local Protection and Humanitarian Mechanisms.

The Liptako-Gourma area has been the epicentre of a region-wide crisis since 2015, characterized by a continuous deterioration of the security situation. The project aimed to study the effectiveness of humanitarian protection programs in this region, and in particular, local protection systems as well as the links between local protection mechanisms and humanitarian protection mechanisms. The research objective was to strengthen the effectiveness of humanitarian protection programs and their integration or complementarity with local protection systems.

About the project

This two-year research project (2020–22) was conducted in the Liptako-Gourma region—comprising the tri-border areas of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. See the related content (to the right) for the full list of research outputs. The research was based on qualitative and quantitative data that was collected in Burkina Faso (North and Sahel region), Mali (Mopti region) and Niger (Tillabéri region), during two research phases: August–September 2020 and June–July 2021. For security reasons, the film was shot only in Mali (Mopti region). The research was conducted by SIPRI, the Danish Refugee Council, and their local partners, Centre pour la Gouvernance Démocratique (Burkina Faso), Laboratoire d’Etudes et de Recherche sur les Dynamiques Sociales et le Développement Local (Niger), and Point Sud (Mali). It was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office.
