Step into the past and explore the industry that shaped Sheffield

Immerse yourself in life at home and at work at this rural scythe and steelworks dating back to the 1700s, just a 10 minute walk from Millhouses Park and Ecclesall Woods.


During your visit you’ll be transported back through the centuries to find out all about the innovative processes and people that helped earn Sheffield’s reputation as the Steel City.

  • Imagine what it was like to live and work onsite in the Manager’s House, Worker’s Cottage and Counting House
  • See the mighty waterwheels and picturesque dam that powered the Hamlet
  • Explore the last complete surviving crucible steel furnace in the UK, along with the grinding hull, tilt forge and steam engine
  • Enjoy a tasty breakfast, brunch or lunch and the finest specialty coffee in our neighbourhood café, Joni, open seven days a week

See the huge waterwheels that powered the works’ tilt hammers, blowing engine, grindstones and boring machinery, fed by the water from the River Sheaf through the dam.
