(1906-1974) US publisher and editor (though the latter in name only), born in Lithuania, in the USA from childhood and naturalized as a US citizen in 1930. After a long career with the magazine American Mercury, Ferman – as general manager of Mercury Publications – become involved with 1947 plans for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, oversaw its launch in 1949, was listed from August 1954 to October 1970 as Publisher and from December 1964 to December 1965 as Editor, a position to which his son, Edward L Ferman, who had in fact been ghost-editing the journal, officially succeeded him. He also founded Venture Science Fiction as a companion to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction; it ran 1957-1958 under the editorship of Robert P Mills, with a second series being published 1969-1970 under the editorship of his son. Ferman edited an anthology of stories from Venture Science Fiction magazine: No Limits (anth 1964). [MJE/PN]
