Katy Perry is known for her fun pop songs and unique style. With a number one song and Grammy nomination under her belt, Katy is ready hit the road in 2009 on a national tour. We got a chance to ask her about her fashion influences, her next CD, and what she plans to wear at the Grammy Awards in February.
17: Who or what has influenced your style the most?
Katy Perry: It's a bit of a concoction of different things. When I first started out, I was really attracted to having my own sense of style because I started swing dancing, lindy hop, and jitterbug. I would go to the Santa Barbara [California] rec hall and I would learn how to dance there. I was taught by some of the more seasoned dancers who were actually very involved in the scene.
These girls would get out of their old vintage Cadillacs with their pencil skirts and their tight little cardigans and their bullet bras and I thought it was so unique and different than what was going on in the 2000s. I think it's grown a lot - it's changed. I love details. I love different colors. I love funny things. I have this one shirt that's got smiley faces as shoulders - so it's really cute and quite humorous. I love a good sense of humor in clothes.
17: What kind of sound do you want to have for your next CD?
KP: I still want to make a pop record. I want to make a more sonically current pop record. I maybe want to make people move a little bit more. I'm still driving along on the pop freeway of life. Thinking even further into the future, I definitely want to make an acoustic record. I want to try lots of different things.
17: You're visiting tons of places on your world tour. What places or venues are you most excited to visit?
KP: I'm real excited to play The Fillmore in San Francisco. I'm also excited to play three sold-out nights at Irving Plaza in New York City. That's huge to me. And then my final show in Santa Barbara - a coming home show, I guess you would say.
17: What are you planning to wear to the Grammy's?
KP: I don't have everything specifically ready for it, but I'm getting ready for it. There's a group that I work with a lot called The Blondes and they're fantastic. They sketched out an amazing fruity concoction of a number for my performance for the Grammy's and so it'll be very exciting to reveal that.
