TIMELINE

  • U2Paul "Bono" Hewson, Dave "The Edge" Evans, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen, Jr. U2 came together in Dublin, Ireland in 1976. The band spent the end of the 70s finding their "alternative" niche, gradually rose to rock super-stardom in the 80s, and continued their mastery of rock, pop, alternative fusion into the 90s and beyond. U2 provided rock music with a message - often on politics and religion. With large-scale world tours and successful LP releases, U2 have made

1976...

  • U2U2 began in 1976 when 14 year-old Larry Mullen wanted to form a band at his high school in Dublin, the Mount Temple School. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and a guy named Dick Evans responded to Larry's ad and they formed a band named 'Feedback.' A year later they changed their name to 'Hype' and Dick Evans left the band. With Evans gone, the name was changed to U2.

1978...

  • U2 - 'Boy'U2 caught a break when they won a talent contest and were approached by a manager. An EP called U2:3 was released and successful in Ireland but the band was not making much headway elsewhere.

1980...

  • October 20: U2 signed with Island Records and released their debut LP, Boy. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, Boy introduced U2's sound to America's alternative radio with a refreshing dose of alternative-rock in a sea of post-punk synthesizers. The band had a moderate alternative hit with "I Will Follow." At the time, Rolling Stone magazine said of the group: "U2 is talented, charming and potentially (they're all still under 21) exceptional."

U2 - "Another Day" (Single) U2 - "11 O'Clock Tick Tock" (Single) U2 - "A Day Without Me" (Single) U2 - "Fire" (Single) U2 - "Gloria" (Single) U2 - "Two Hearts Beat As One" (Single)

1981...

  • U2 - 'October'October 12: Increasing success in the U.S. and the UK came with release of October. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, October contained the singles "Gloria" and "Fire." Critics of the LP began to praise The Edge's guitar style as the potential driving force of U2's sound.

  • U2 - 'War'February 28: College radio success turned into rock radio dominance with the release of War. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, War presented the band's harder edge and even harder lyrical preaching. War was ranked # 40 in Rolling Stone magazine's "100 Best Albums of the 80s" and said of the LP: "War makes for impressive listening, but more important, it deals with a difficult subject in a sensiable way..."
  • U2 - 'Under A Blood Red Sky'November 21: U2 released the live LP Under A Blood Red Sky produced by Jimmy Iovine. The live performances were taken from the band's "War" tour recorded in Denver, Boston, and West Germany.

The band had some success with the tracks, "Discotheque," "Staring At The Sun," "Last Night On Earth," and "Please." Later, the Irish Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the 'PopMart Tour' could make a stop in Dublin and U2 played Landsdowne Road Stadium August 30th and 31st.
  • U2September: A man claiming to have lost his hearing as a result of a U2 concert was awarded $34,000 by French courts. The ruling was against the organizers of a 1993 concert, and not the band itself. The man reportedly snuck past security to get a better view of the band and closer to the speakers.
  • After making a promise on New Years Eve in 1995 to return to Sarajevo and perform, Bono did just that when U2 returned to the city. The concert event was the first major concert in Sarajevo since the war ended. Over 45,000 people attended. "If rock 'n roll music means anything, it's some kind of liberation...It is about freedom in the end," Bono proclaimed in 1995. After stepping off the plane, Bono told reporters: "It's great to be back. Are we really here? We've been working for 4 years to come." I was like, 'I can't write just straight love songs, they make me want to throw-up'."
