About
I have my Debut Novel "White Coven Awakening" at Pegasus Vanguard. There are 4+ follow on volumes / sequels that I would like to find another publisher for. Pegasus has reviewed the three that are complete and wants to publish them but I don't care for their terms.
I'm a prolific technical writer with over 70 publications and multiple awards, in the fields of Naval Architecture, Ocean engineering and Marine Forensic Analyses. Intros to the books follow in order. These are a series of adventures or episodes.
The White Coven series chronicles a nerdy high school girl who's maternal line traces white witches, healers, and midwives back to the 800's when the earths poles last shifted and the magic left the world. The poles are shifting back and the magic is returning along with the Fey who were forced into hibernation. The world they are emerging into is vastly different that it was 1200 years ago, and not all of them are nice. Angie and her friend's discover their own magic wrapped up in self discovery, first love and AP Calculus. They run afoul of predators, both human and not, modern day and historical gangsters, Modern medicine and ancient diseases, and cursed spell books.

Intro to the first book: White Coven Awakening:
As Angie got ready for bed, she agonized over the eerie blue-green glow coming from her hands. She had chickened out again asking “Doctor Mom”, what it might mean. Her reflection in the old mirror caught her eye. She was 5 ft 7, on the thin side, but with ample curves in the right places, elbow length cinnamon colored reddish hair, cute enough, but not notably beautiful. A plain Jane with nice hair she thought.
She was super tired from a long day at school and the mountains of homework that 5 AP classes brought with it.
As soon as her head hit the pillow, Angie drifted into a deep sleep and began to dream.
She was sitting in a chair by a crackling wood fire by a huge stone fireplace. There was a small caldron hanging over the fire, boiling gently. It smelled like some kind of soup. The dim plank walled room around her was filled with hazy women in period clothes from different times in history. She could sense that they were the spirits of her ancestors going back many hundreds of years.
“We’ve worked our whole lives to pass down the healing arts to our daughters.” They murmured, “but this one and her mother will take the healing arts far beyond our best work.” “Both of the sisters will be gifted healers, I can see it in the fates," another said.
"They will live through the magic's return," said another.
“She will pass through many trials and meet with many dangerous creatures,” said a wisp of a ghost.
“And yet the most dangerous will always be other humans, as it has been for all the time before her.” Said a scholarly matron in Victorian garb. “She will love deeply and be loved by many. Some will know her as an Angel, although she walks on mortal feet.”
The dream faded but she could remember it vividly in the morning, which was odd. What did they mean by “sisters,” she had one brother and no sister. What did they mean by “the magics return?” The love comments were happy and reassuring, but seeing as she had never been on a date yet and never been kissed, it seemed kind of far fetched. “Angel,” She had no aspirations to be a nun or other holy person and honestly she was too selfish to be “Angel” material. Oh well, it was just a wonky dream, another school day awaited.
Intro to Book 2: White Coven Worlds Shift
Judy Strang was excited, her anomalies investigations group at the NSA have found a bumper crop of weirdness all centered in a few hundred square miles. There were numerous bigfoot sightings, 8 or 9 teen to 20’s boys disappearing, at least two cases where a white witch appeared to be saving lives and several small but intense snowstorms that appeared out of nowhere, lasted less than an hour and then disappeared just as quickly. She had to get up there and investigate.
As the Earths Magnetic and Magical field continues to flip in jumps and starts, life gets interesting. Cell phones and many computers are fried by the electromagnetic pulses. The electronic ignition is most newer cars leaves them dead by the side of the road, but older vehicles and diesel trucks are mostly unaffected.
Meanwhile the White Coven is expanding their magical powers, falling in love, and learning to fly, while Dryads and Mermaids stop by for medical help.
An Invitation for the whole coven to join the fey for the Spring Equinox leads to a scramble to find out what lore of the Fairy is real versus fictionalized. What the hell have they gotten themselves into this time. Will it be enchanting, or will it spell disaster?
Sarah stepped off the school bus on her first day at her new school and the boy she had been dreaming about since her father died stepped off another bus down the driveway. The attraction was powerful for both of them. Was it love at first sight or her Evil uncle trying to use them both? Paul had spent the last month carving a girls face out of a block of stone based on the girl who kept appearing in his dreams. When they finally meet that morning in the middle school bus que, the likeness on the stone is a near photographic match to Sarah’s face.
Rose Brunelleschi purchased the old Prohibition era Primrose Inn on the lake shore with plans to turn it into a real live school of white magic. She didn’t bargain for the drug dealers and graffiti artists she would have to deal with. The dozens of ghosts and poltergeists were another challenge. Just when it was all starting to settle down the ghost of a 14,000 year old shaman appears.
Secret passages and haunted rooms, forgotten riches, new friends and old enemy’s, come into the mix along with dozens of otherworldly creatures each with their own agendas.
White Coven, Book 3, Tales of the Primrose:
The Primrose Academy for White Witch Magic is open for business and its first class is half humans learning magic and half Fey learning about the world after their 1200-year hibernation. Culture shocks, budding romances, and the ongoing ghost infestation ranging from 40 to 14000 years old, complicate life.
The Covid Epidemic sets in with a vengeance across the world and even the boondocks of upstate New York. Rival Covens are met and nurtured or vanquished.
When POTUS summons you to Washington for a serious meeting on the Magic that is about to change the world, you go and give it your best shot. Is every spy agency on earth working on spinning up their own classes of magical assassins and spies?
Angie’s left hand came down on the ancient hobgoblin manuscript that inspired the Voynich manuscript, and she was instantly transported to their home world. She watched as Mountain sized asteroids pummel the surface in an extinction level event. A small flotilla of spaceships can be seen departing for interstellar space. Suddenly she is back in Quills Kitchen as the lore mistress of the Hobgoblin's yanked the book out of her hands. Angie’s last time travel was only 1200 years and from New York to the hills above Florence and the use of power almost killed her. Can she survive traveling many millennia and light years?
The Fey Healers who Quill awakens, range from grumpy, pompous old curmudgeons to younger Doctors who are interested in learning the many advances in human medicine. The budding magical medical fraternity are called to the test when a school bus full of high school students goes off the road and rolls down the mountainside. If you’re badly injured, does it matter if the “Doctor” who fixes you up is a MedWitch or a high elf using magic or a modern Dr using stitches? Actually, in terms of pain and disfigurement it does…….
White Coven Book 4, Life Enchanted:
As the Poles continue to shift, Magic comes flooding back into the world as a worldwide phenomenon and not all of it is good.
As the various spy agencies, and commercial, and religious empires, learn of and adopt Magic into their toolkits for good or for great evil, these begin to intersect with our hero's. The White Coven's moto, "To Help, To Heal, and to never Harm unless absolutely necessary" is put to the test.
Some of the dark Fey awaken from their 1200-year slumber and set about capturing a new group of human slaves to work for them. The abduction doesn't go according to plan and some of the intended victims escape but are trapped in Fairy. An epic quest ensues. Will they make good their escape, and rescue their friends or will they be trapped there until they die?
With new Covens popping up all over the place, how does one create a new Mantel to lead them? Follow our heroes as they travel through enchanted Grimoire's, time, and space to look for the answers and encounter unexpected interventions from a much higher power.
What price extinction? Harpo-Sue-Ellen is the last of the Harpy-Owls left alive. She asks our Hero's to help her save her species. Follow Angie and David as they uncover ancient crimes, terrifying monsters and help to right ancient wrongs.
What do you do with a misfit collection of witch-babies, Mer-toddlers, and Infant fauns who's parents need childcare? Opening an enchanted preschool in the time of COVID when all preschools in the state are closed, is a daunting undertaking.
A human girl has fallen in love with a Centaur Prince and conceived a child. There is no way her human body can carry a 100-pound centaur foal to term. The hunt for a secret Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, (NICU) is on. Will it exist in time to save the foal? Watch as the Coven deals with antique gangsters and modern-day crooks on a perilous path to try to save the baby centaur hybrid.
It's senior year in high school for Angie and David and it hits them hard that they will be leaving the homes, families and friends that have supported them their whole lives and need to make decisions that will shape the rest of their lives. What colleges should they apply to? Will they get in? What do they want to Major in? Where will they live when they get there? So much uncertainty, but so much promise at the same time. Should they get Married before they leave for college in the fall? They're deeply in love, but is this the right time? Since they are only 18, will their parents give permission?
The game is afoot and the adventures keep coming as they wander through different periods of history. The greatest adventure is inventing themselves for the first time as "life enchanted" unfolds around them.
White Coven, Book 5, Tails by the Sea:
She woke from her long sleep in the cave on the west coast of Ireland she had lived in for centuries since she was driven out of Wales. Everything she owned had turned to dust except a few precious glass bottles and and handful of gold coins. She clothed herself in Illusion and began the walk to town to buy food. As she walked down the weird smooth black path in the fog, a monster with glowing eyes roared out of the gloom and slammed into her throwing her through the air into pain and darkness. The Doctors in the shock Trauma center did what they could for the Jane Doe. When she started floating several inches off the bed and her left hand was wreathed in blue flames, they initiated some calls. Shortly later Angie and David teleported into the Shock Trauma center at the request of the US Ambassador to the Fey to sort things out before the press got wind of it.
Aunt Helen said, while you're staying in my cottage by the sea, if the fog comes in in a straight vertical face, get inside and salt all the windows and doors immediately. That Foggy day, Angie the healer was summoned out to the Garage outside the protective salt. There were 7 tall armored figures in shades of greys and black with long white hair that was floating around behind their faces like they were under water. The scales making up their armor where the size of playing cards. 6 were mounted on half fish / half horse beasts with iridescent multicolored scales on the hind fish half. Praxis said, "This is Marrowdelf, of the Feth Fiada, princess of the Marrowkin on these shores. This is Angie Durkin, the powerful witch healer that the mermaid Calan told you about and her betrothed David Jenkins."
Marrowdelf stepped back and glanced over her shoulder. A youngster of maybe 7 or 8 came forward cradling her arm. Angie could see that there was a large diamond Jig embedded in her arm and that the wound had gone septic, partially in response to her acute allergy to Iron. She sent to David, I need my hands but don't let go of my arm no matter what.
She kneeled down and gently grasped the child's arm. She calmed the terrified girl and froze her in place, then numbed the pain. She teleported the lure out of the arm without causing any more damage. She started the healing from the inside out as usual. She could tell that the Merrows trying to dislodge the hook barb had severed a nerve and the child could no longer feel 3 of her fingers. Angie made a prayer and a wish to mend the nerve. Lastly she damped down the allergic reaction. She couldn’t take it all as that would reduce the child's ability to heal the rest of the way, but that would go away by itself in a few days. Angie unfroze the girl. "I think that will do it, try to move your fingers please?" she asked. The girl flinched and looked at her hand, She slowly opened and closed her hand and then opened and closed her webbed fingers individually. She exclaimed excitedly, "My hand, it was maimed beyond repair, our healers said I would live a half life and they might have to take my arm off to stop the poison, you have healed me." She launched herself at Angie and gave her a tearful hug.
Princess Marrowdelf asked, "What is your fee for this healing magic?"
Angie looked off into space for a second, "I ask for one fresh caught codfish, big enough to feed 4 humans and these two fey for one meal." Princess Marrowdelf looked shocked and puzzled, "but that is nothing." Surely you greedy humans want more than that, you deserve more than that?" Angie laughed, "And yet that is what I choose to charge for this minor healing. If I help deliver your babies safely, I may decide on a larger fee. In this instance, you cannot claim that I was greedy or that I overcharged you." She ended with a little bow.
There are many adventures and side quests running through the series. Its a fun read

Reevaluation of Basic Ocean Wave Mechanics Based on Large Historical Data Sets: E-text book looking for a publisher.
The practice of hydrodynamic modeling of ships and other bodies in waves is based on groundwork done by brilliant people working with slide rules and hand calculations in the 1940's thru the early 1970's before modern computers and long term arrays of offshore buoys existed. This work was based on relatively small data sets from a limited range of locations and sea or lake conditions. (Bretschneider 1959, Pierson & Moskowitz, Bhattacharyya 1978 and many others)
Some of this early work was based on a few hundred wave spectra from the post world war two, weatherships in the open ocean North Atlantic. (Roll,1958) The pioneering work of C.L. Bretschneider was based partially on a few dozen 100 wave long, spectra collected in inland lakes, (Bretschneider 1959). These data sets were the best available at that time.

The vast computing power in even a modest laptop in 2024, and enormous archive of high quality data available today, allow us to pursue these studies from a different perspective than the revered original authors had available.

The work described herein reexamines some of the foundational assumptions based on 3 to 4 million wave spectra recorded over a 10 year period by NOAA/NDBC wave buoys at more than 52 locations in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes.
Foundational Assumptions Include:
1. Stationarity: The wind and wave fields do not change with time over the duration of an analysis.
o Swells from distant weather often enter an area in a single recording interval.
o The rate of change of weather can be developed by location and season.
2. Ergodicness: The wind and wave fields do not change with location over the duration of an analysis.
o This is problematic with high speed vessels as the area can be very large over a few hours.
o This is problematic in coastal areas where changes in bottom depth can dramatically change the longer period waves before it affects the shorter period waves on distance scales as small as a few tens of meters.
3. That the waves are a narrow banded Gaussian process and their peaks therefore follow a Rayleigh Distribution.
4. That the wave spectra are directly related to the local wind speed, fetch distance and duration.
5. That the wave spectra can be adequately described as a single peak.
While this exploration of a much larger and spatially relevant data set, challenges many of the early assumptions, at the end of the day, we still need an acceptable methodology on which to base seakeeping and maneuvering studies.
The data is presented, followed by a discussion of it's strong and weak points. Next the data is processed a number of different ways to develop useful information. There are many different credible definitions for terms like "Sea State," that break waves up by various size and shapes of bins defined by minima and maxima. A "comb filter" is nothing more than bounded sorting bins that are systematically arranged.
The large data set was sorted a number of ways that may be useful going forward.
Useful Quantities developed include:
• Significant wave height (H1/3) vs Average Period probability of occurrence in Wilbur-Marks, NATO 4194 Table D2, and 1 meter comb filters
• H1/3 vs dominant wave period (aka Period of Maximum Energy) probability of occurrence in Wilbur-Marks, NATO 4194 Table D2, and 1 meter comb filters
• H1/3 vs Mean Wave Direction, probability of occurrence in the NATO comb filters
• Wind Direction vs Mean Wave Direction, probability of occurrence in a 30 degree comb filter
• H1/3 vs Wind Speed, probability of occurrence in the NATO and 1meter comb filters.
• Number of Spectral peaks vs Sea state in the NATO comb filter
• Spectral band width for Seas and all waves vs Sea state
• Wind speed vs H1/3 in 5 knot and 1m bins
• APD in 1 second bins vs H1/3 in 1m bins
• DPD in 1 second bins vs H1/3 in 1m bins
Where the available data supported it, these tables were developed from the raw spectral data as well as the separate NDBC Metocean data sets. The Meto file data was used to validating the data reduction methodology for the more complicated spectral data, against the data reduced by NDBC. The caveat on the available data is simply that the spectral data sets contain aspects of the data that the Metocean data does not and vice versa so both were necessary to develop as full as picture as possible. For instance the Spectral data contains no wind information, while the Meto data contains wind but nothing about the shape of the spectra or the number of spectral peaks.
