Description

In 1963, Malaya, North Borneo (Sabah), Sarawak and Singapore joined to form the Federation of Malaysia. On 5 May 1964 the NOCs of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah (formerly North Borneo), and Sarawak formed the Olympic Council of Malaysia. Three of these states had already competed at the Olympics previously, but they would march under one banner at the 1964 Tokyo Games. Singapore separated from Malaysia in 1965, and since then Singapore has competed on its own. Malaysia has since competed at all Games of the Olympiad except in 1980.

It won its first Olympic medal, a bronze by Alan Sidek Mohamed and Ajib Sidek Mohamed in men’s badminton double, its national sport, in 1992. Malaysia has since won eight more Olympic medals in badminton (six silvers and two more bronzes), as well as a silver and bronze in both diving and track cycling. Badminton player Lee Chong Wei is Malaysia’s top performer, with three silver medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He is followed by cyclist Muhammad Azizulhasni Bin Awang, who won the nation’s two cycling medals, and Pandelela Rinong, who won the country’s two diving medals. As of 2022, Malaysia’s total of 13 medals without a gold medal makes it the nation with the most medals but yet to win gold.

Malaysia first appeared at the Olympic Winter Games in 2018, represented by two men: Julian Yee finished 25th in men’s figure skating, while Jeffrey Webb was an Alpine skier who competed in the slalom and giant slalom. Webb returned to compete at Beijing 2022, accompanied by female Alpine skier Aruwin Salehhuddin, with her best result being a 38th position in the giant slalom.
