Safety for our future - bundled competence in nuclear technology
The main tasks of Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf GmbH (NES), which are carried out on behalf of the Republic of Austria, include the collection, processing, conditioning and storage of radioactive waste and the decontamination and decommissioning (dismantling) of nuclear facilities, in particular from 45 years of research and development at the Seibersdorf location.
Pursuant to a contractual agreement between the Republic of Austria, the municipality of Seibersdorf and Nuclear Engineering Seibersdorf GmbH (NES), NES undertakes to collect, condition and store all radioactive waste generated in Austria until it is sent to a final disposal site to be determined.
In the fulfilment of its tasks assigned by law and on the basis of long-term contracts with the Republic of Austria, NES guarantees the highest level of safety and the latest technical standards.
NES operates an Integrated Management System (IMS) in accordance with EU Directive 2011/70 and the Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrSchG) §53. In addition to the quality management system (ISO 9001), the IMS also includes an environmental management system (ISO 14001) and an occupational safety and health management system (ISO 45001).
International collaboration
Cross-border cooperation ensures proper conditioning of radioactive waste and decommissioning of nuclear equipment in accordance with international standards and to prepare solutions for the permanent disposal issue. To establish and secure nuclear technical expertise, there are numerous collaborations with the IAEA, the Atominstitut of the TU Wien, as well as with foreign centres for the treatment and disposal of radioactive waste and for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and equipment.

International exchange of ideas serves to ensure the current state of science and technology.
