Description
As a centralized archive for documentation in the cultural sphere, RGALI was founded in 1941 on the basis of the collected manuscript holdings of the State Literary Museum (Goslit-Muzei) and designated documents from other museums and archives. Currently RGALI is the largest repository of institutional records and personal papers relating to the history of Russian and Soviet literature, music, theatre, cinema and fine arts.
The Archive contains important documents about books and artworks which were removed from libraries and museums in several European countries by the Soviet Trophy Brigades in the aftermath of the Second World War. A multilingual CD-Rom catalogue of these items was published in 1996, RGALI - Russian State Archive of Literature and Art: The Complete Archive Guide by Klaus W. Waschik and Natalia B. Volkova. It contains a complete description of more than 2,500 archival stocks ("Fonds"), a compilation of about one million documents and more than 500 photographs and additional biographical data.
