Research into works of art missing from the
museum
In 1937 a special commission set up by Hitler and
headed by Hans Adolf Ziegler systematically combed through German museum
collections and confiscated art the National Socialists considered "degenerate".
Many were displayed in the infamous "Degenerate Art" exhibition that opened in
Munich in July 1937. The museum was one of the institutions most heavily
affected by these confiscations. On two separate occasions a total of 157
sculptures, 455 prints and 14 sculptures were confiscated. The works met with
very different fates. Some were sold, others were destroyed. A few found their
way back to the collection before and after the war. In 1990 the museum
published a catalogue that accompanied an exhibition on the events of 1937 at
the museum. It contains historical background and a list of works of art with
photographs and details of their provenance and fate after confiscation. It can
be obtained from the museum. A copy is available at the Central Registry for
consultation.
