After attaining the highest degree of mental and physical perfection, he was entrusted with the knowledge of the ancient scrolls, that bore the secret writings of past generations of wise men! From them he learned concentration, mind over matter, the art of activating and harnessing that unused portion of the brain, that made seemingly fantastic feats possible! Then, he returned to America, with his faithful friend, Tabu, and sought out a new life, in a new land, that required the emergence of Peter Cannon…Thunderbolt!”

Comments: Created by Peter Morisi.

Thanks to Mack Murdock for getting in touch to tell me of more of Thunderbolt's foes. Mack also mentions that "There IS no Thunderbolt #1 (asides from the DC adaptation of the character). When Charlton cancelled Son of Vulcan, they continued the numbering system with Thunderbolt!" He is almost certainly correct about the fact that Charlton continued the numbering of the Thunderbolt comic from Son of Vulcan, as the former had a regular series which started with #51 (March 1966), and the latter finished on #50 (January 1966). However there WAS a Thunderbolt #1 published in January 1966 by Charlton, featuring the character's origin - the image used above is from the cover of it.

Thunderbolt served as the inspiration for Ozymandias in Alan Moore's Watchmen.

Thanks to Tom Wright for additional information.
