Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Security Forces, and our partners in Syria, enabled by CJTF-OIR, have liberated the territory once occupied by Daesh; however, Daesh remains a persistent terrorist threat. Our partners will ensure the enduring defeat of Daesh remnants with CJTF-OIR support. 

In Iraq, the ISF has shown it is capable of preventing a Daesh resurgence by conducting operations alone and delivering training. The Coalition is in Iraq to support partner forces at the invitation of the Government of Iraq. The ISF have full responsibility for training facilities and training programs. 

In Syria, the Coalition conducts advising through partnered patrols with the SDF and Coalition combined exercises. Specifically, Coalition advisors trained and developed the SDF on counter-IED tactics for force protection and noted improved capability in that area. The SDF demonstrates improved capability to conduct counter-Daesh operations. For example, the SDF conducted several unilateral high-risk arrests and "finish" operations. These operations demonstrate the SDF's capability to prevent the resurgence of Daesh. 

Enable Sustainable Military Partner Capacity

Coalition forces are building partner forces’ capability to defeat Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

Iraq

All conventional training in Iraq is now conducted by the Iraqis, with Coalition logistics support via the Counter-ISIS Train and Equip Fund (with more than $5 billion). In 2020, the Coalition transferred 8 bases to 100 percent Iraqi Security Forces control where they now conduct their own training and daily defeat Daesh operations. Since 2014, CJTF-OIR has trained, equipped and mentored more than 240,000 members of the Iraqi Security Forces, to include Iraqi Army, Iraqi Air Force and Aviation Command, Federal Police, Counterterrorism Service, Border Guards, Energy Police and Peshmerga.  In 2019, more than 50,000 ISF personnel completed training delivered by Coalition troop-contributing nations.

In Iraq, the focus of CJTF-OIR remains on supporting the operations of the Iraqi Security Forces and building their capacity in order to achieve the enduring defeat of Daesh. We continue to work closely with our Iraqi partners, building their capabilities to defend their border, defeat ISIS remnants in Iraq, and prevent an ISIS resurgence.

Daesh has lost the capability to launch large scale attacks in Iraq. This speaks volumes to the dedication of the Iraq Security Forces and their desire to bring stability back to their homeland. 

Syria

In Syria, CJTF-OIR conducts partner defeat Daesh operations with the Syrian Democratic Forces, as well as efforts to secure critical infrastructure in the Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah regions to prevent that infrastructure from falling back into the hands of Daesh. 

Our mission in Syria today remains the same as it was when we first began operations in 2014; to enable the enduring defeat of ISIS.
