Toby Venables is an award-winning screenwriter, novelist and journalist who lectures on writing and film at ARU in Cambridge.
He has numerous commissioned film and TV screenplays to his credit, and was co-creator and co-writer (with writing partner Felicity Evans) of the BAFTA-winning socio-political horror movie His House. Starring Sope Dirisu, Wunmi Mosaku and Matt Smith, directed by Remi Weekes and produced by New Regency and BBC Films, it premiered at Sundance 2020, with global rights bought by Netflix. It reached No.2 in the Netflix UK charts has a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. He has worked on several book-to-screen adaptations - most recently John Blackburn's Our Lady Of Pain and Rebecca Netley's The Whistling - and at the time of writing has two completed, original scripts under option. He also regularly works as a script doctor, script editor and consultant and is the author of four historical novels (published by Abaddon). He was recipient of the Keats-Shelley Memorial Prize in 2001.
