Throughout the six-episode run of Netflix’s Everybody’s in L.A., John Mulaney’s comedian guests kept trying to find ways to describe the live talk show’s chaotic-bordering-on-surreal atmosphere. “I feel like this entire show is a Banksy!” a confused Jon Stewart suggested. Nikki Glaser perhaps explained it best, by telling Mulaney, “It’s like an inside joke that only you are in on.”
That line applies just as well to Mulaney’s delightful 2019 Netflix special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch. Both then and now, the...

Strangeland was one of those random bubblecase VHS horror rentals from the local video store that made you feel like you’d won the lottery. An absolute blind rental that ended up blowing your mind and making you feel like you knew something no-one else was aware of. It had it all. Scares, a kick ass metal soundtrack, the birth of internet horror and Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider (who wrote the film as well) coming off the top rope and shocking the hell out of you with one of the scariest villain performances ever.

As if seeing him in Adrenaline wasn’t enough, Louis Mandylor is back in Crossfire, another film about an FBI agent dealing with the revenge killing of a family member. This time he plays F.B.I. Agent Mark Patson. Patson is in the news for saving several women from human traffickers.
The last time he was in the news was for taking down the Gorilla Gang. That resulted in the death of his wife in a revenge killing, something his daughter Alisha has never forgiven him for. Michael Mann has been clear that 1995's "Heat" is a drama and not a crime movie. But even when the audience is in on the mystery from the very start, and knows what the criminals are planning, Mann is able to make the story compelling through the characters' cat-and-mouse investigation of each other.
As was one of Mann's goals for the film, "Heat" paints a full picture of the private lives of Al Pacino's Vicent Hanna and Robert De Niro's Neil McAuley. Consistent with the film's title, Hanna's escalating efforts to subdue McAuley drive the plot, with each constantly trying to outsmart the other. Only at great cost does Hanna finally catch McCauley. In Mann's other films, like "Thief" (1981), "Collateral" (2004), and "Miami Vice" (2006) — though he rotates between spending time with cops, criminals, or civilians — characters are similarly in regular search for insight into how their enemy operates.

Like many low budget action films, there is a constant, uneasy tension between ambition and what is possible. Hustle Down is aiming to be a Michael Mann thriller, but the constraints constantly degrade the experience. Whether it is low budget cameras, direction, or uneven acting.
An almost unrecognisable Tom Sizemore (with dyed black hair and looking elderly) is running around (and gosh is it a sad sight) in a cheap shirt, avoiding cartel hitmen.
I barely recognise the wispy voice of Tom Sizemore here, nor his ghoulish countenance and I certainly don’t recognise his ripe acting. He was one of my favourite actors for a long time, and it is so sad to...

Michael Mann's Heat (1995) is showing November 11 - December 11, 2017 on Mubi in the United Kingdom.Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) emerges from a train with unassuming poise, mingling seamlessly with the other disembarking passengers. As they recede into the background, however, congealing into airy circular blurs of out-of-focus features, Neil becomes the obvious point of attention, even more so as the camera pulls back and follows his journey from a comparative distance. In the guise of a medic, he makes his way to a hospital and coasts through its thoroughfares, passing oblivious employees and patients, until he arrives at his destination: an ambulance, which he steals. Neil’s anonymity enabled the theft and it allowed for his inconspicuous progress. He fit in. He seemed natural. Wherever he went, he had the perceptible appearance of belonging. This is key to what distinguishes Heat, Michael Mann’s 1995 contemporary crime masterpiece. Capitalizing on...

My Father Die is an angry little debut for Sean Brosnan, and thankfully for papa Pierce Brosnan, not with biographical intent. It’s true that Brosnan keeps revenge in the family, but only by way of fictional bayou country folks. Pierce is safe from Sean’s bullet-ridden bite of familial revenge, unlike some characters who find themselves caught between not-so-friendly fire and the struggles of living up to (or denouncing) parental pedestals. It’s pulpy, fur-wearing, country fried fury, following a darker path that’s guided by stellar direction from the man with the golden camera. It’s not perfect, but stylish and provocative enough to erase any notion that “first-timer” is synonymous with “amateur.”

The criminal caper that goes wrong is always good for a suspenseful, absorbing thriller movie. Just from memory there is The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, (almost any classic film noir dealing with a criminal undertaking, if it didn’t go wrong it wouldn’t be noir now would it?) Odds Against tomorrow, Reservoir Dogs, Bob Le Flambeur, Rififi, and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.
The list is just about endless, in fact, precious few movies about criminals show the heist going off without a hitch. Add to that list 7 Minutes, a tough, unblinking look at a caper done by amateurs so desperate they are willing to risk everything to try and pull it off.
Sam (Luke Mitchell), Mike, (Jason Ritter, son of John and showing some good acting chops) and Owen (Zane Holtz) lead small town lives of quiet desperation. They try and make some money through drug...

"This is our way out, it's perfect." Starz Digital has unveiled a trailer for Jay Martin's 7 Minutes, a modern day intense heist movie about three friends forced to commit a brazen robbery, but end up in a "game of life-or-death". There's some interesting twists and turns that they hint at in the trailer; I'm curious who that guy is that pops up at the end with the shotgun. The cast includes Luke Mitchell, Leven Rambin, Jason Ritter, Kris Kristofferson, Joel Murray, Kevin Gage and Zane Holtz. The film is the feature debut of music video director Jay Martin, who also worked as a storyboard artist on a number of major features (I Am Legend, Catching Fire). It looks like it might be engaging, with some solid action throughout. Fire it up. Here's the official trailer + poster for Jay Martin's 7 Minutes, also in high def from Apple: Plot synopsis:...

Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.
Hollywood has had a long love affair with the heist sub-genre. Dating as far back as the silent film era with 1928’s Alias Jimmy Valentine, and transcending various genres like westerns (The War Wagon), war (Kelly’s Heroes) and even animation (Toy Story 3), the heist has tantalized our fantasies and outsmarted our wits for decades. Whether it’s for the very last time before retirement, gathering the gang back together for a big payday or for the thrill of pulling off the perfect robbery, all heist films share one key element: commitment to a plan.

Did you dig our 2009 Fearnet original web-series 'Fear Clinic?' Well then, you're going to love this! Director Robert Hall is back with the brand new movie version of 'Fear Clinic' and we're thrilled to share with you the first trailer for the flick. Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund headlines the cast as Dr. Andover, alongside Fiona Dourif ('Curse Of Chucky'), Thomas Dekker ('A Nightmare On Elm Street'), Kevin Gage ('Laid To Rest'), Slipknot's Corey Taylor and Angelina Armani ('Chromeskull: Laid To Rest 2'). In 'Fear Clinic,' a doctor (Englund) works to cure patients suffering from crippling phobias by placing them inside his invention which induces and controls hallucinations. Needless to say, they hallucinate some pretty wild, horrific stuff! I'm also most excited to see glimpes of the FX work of living legend Steve Johnson in this trailer, who...

A few years ago, Fearnet debuted a unique web series, starring Robert Englund, called "Fear Clinic." Englund played Dr. Andover, a doctor who tried to cure his patients of crippling fears in a manner which is often worse than the disease. The series won two Streamy Awards and great critical acclaim - so much so that it is now being made into a feature film.
Robert Hall directs the feature-length continuation of Dr. Andover and his unorthodox methods. Robert Englund returns as Dr. Andover, and is joined by Fiona Dourif (Curse of Chucky), Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Kevin Gage (Laid to Rest), and Corey Taylor of Slipknot. Anchor Bay has picked up the rights to distribute the film, which is still in production.
The Fear Clinic feature explores several different phobias manifested by the lead characters, all of which stem from the same traumatic experience.

Villains have always been and will always be some of the most fascinating and memorable characters in the world of genre film. Here we will take a look at the greatest villains of cinema from the 1990’s.

Review James Stansfield 10 Jun 2013 - 23:15
Banshee delivers one of its best episodes so far, with the pacey, exhilarating Behold A Pale Rider. Here's James' review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 Behold a Pale Rider
Towards the end of my review of last week’s episode of Banshee, I wondered if Ana really would turn Lucas Hood over to her father Mr. Rabbit, or if her affections for him would weigh too heavily upon her. As it turned out, episode seven left no time for such pondering, and after an instalment which felt a little thin, Banshee returned to its plot-stuffed lightning pace once more.
On reflection, even knowing the little we do about him, it would have been foolish to assume that Mr. Rabbit would want to wait a second longer to get his hands on Hood for what he sees as the stealing away of his daughter. As he...

With the recent Blu-ray release of Lightning Bug from Image Entertainment, I had a chance to talk with star Ashley Laurence and director Robert Hall. You may know Robert Hall from his effects work or Laid to Rest movies, but his first directorial effort was Lightning Bug in 2004 and it’s not what most people would have expected from him. During our interview time, I talked to him about going with a drama over an effects-heavy movie, revisiting the movie after all these years, and what projects he’s planning to direct in the future.
I know that Lightning Bug is a personal story for you and based on some of your past experiences. Can you tell me a bit about your time growing up in Alabama and how the story eventually evolved into Lightning Bug?
Robert Hall: I moved there when I was nine and I felt like a fish out of water.

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the month of January.
Lightning Bug (2004) Image Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Effects guru Robert Hall’s semi-autobiographical film about a small town teen (Reaper's Bret Harrison) who has aspirations to become a special effects artist. An opportunity to manage the town’s local haunted house is thwarted by his alcoholic stepfather and the staunchly religious views of the surrounding population. The solid supporting cast includes That 70’s Show’s Laura Prepon, Hellraiser’s Ashely Lawrence and Kevin Gage. Written and directed by Hall, it’s an affectionate coming-of-age drama that works in spite of an uneven narrative that falls apart in the final half hour. Hopefully this new extended cut will remedy the scripting problems of the original release.
Special Features include:

* Never-before-released extended cut of the film.
* Making-of Featurette
* Audio commentaries with the writer/director and cast.

Robert Hall’s Lightning Bug is now available on Blu-ray, and I had a chance to talk with Hellraiser‘s Ashley Laurence earlier today about her role in the movie. Continue reading to learn about her interest in taking on the part, her love of painting, and the issue some people have with her Geico commercial:
I just recently had a chance to watch the Blu-ray version of Lightning Bug and really enjoyed your performance in it. How did you first meet up with Robert Hall and why was Lightning Bug a movie you wanted to be involved in?
Ashley Laurence: I met Robert working on a horror film in Ireland, and we bonded creatively over some of the aspects in that film. We became friends and he told me he was writing a story that was semi-autobiographical. I was supportive of him and he wanted me to be a part of it.
