He has interviewed the US Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Died after suffering a heart attack while on board the Cunard cruise ship Queen Elizabeth, just hours after setting sail from Southampton. He was due to give a speech to the passengers.

A memorial service was held for him at Westminster Abbey, London on 13 March 2014.
