NCIS: Origins takes us right into the heart of Gibbs’ beginnings, set in the ‘90s, with Austin Stowell stepping in as the young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

This prequel is packed with classic NCIS grit.

Gibbs’ tough-as-nails mentor, Mike Franks (played by Kyle Schmid), guides him at the Camp Pendleton office — back when NCIS was still Nis.

CBS announced today full season orders for the new comedy Poppa’s House and the drama NCIS: Origins, the newest addition to the global franchise.

According to VideoAmp and internal streaming data, with seven days of multiplatform viewing, NCIS: Origins‘ premiere has been seen by 9.0 million viewers and Poppa’s House by 6.41 million viewers.

“NCIS: Origins has added a brilliant new dimension to the NCIS franchise with an origin story of Leroy Jethro Gibbs and a cinematic ’90s experience that features distinct characters, stories, and crime solving. Two more CBS freshmen have earned big votes of confidence from the Eye Network, with prequel series NCIS: Origins and rookie comedy Poppa’s House both snagging full-season orders on Thursday.

NCIS: Origins is currently averaging 6.2 million total viewers (with Live+7 playback), ranking No. 3 among all freshmen shows (behind Matlock and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage). Poppa’s House, meanwhile, thus far is averaging 4.3 million total viewers, per Nielsen, and ranks as the fall’s No. 3 new comedy.

“NCIS: Origins” and “Poppa’s House” just got a boost of confidence with full season orders at CBS. The “NCIS” prequel spinoff and the Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.-led sitcom, which both air Monday nights, have upped their first seasons from 13 to 18 episodes each.

The order stems from strong viewership for the premieres of both new shows. “NCIS: Origins” Episode 1 has been seen by 9 million viewers, while “Poppa’s House” has garnered 6.41 million viewers, according to VideoAmp and internal streaming data. On streaming via Paramount+ and CBS Tve (CBS.com and the CBS app), the network says both shows posted significant gains from their counterparts last season — “Origins” was up 54% from “NCIS: Hawai’i,” while “Poppa’s House” was up 137% from “Bob Hearts Abishola.”

The prequel drama “NCIS: Origins” and the multi-cam comedy “Poppa’s House” have both received full season orders at CBS, Variety has learned. Both shows are produced by CBS Studios.

It’s time for a classic Coach and Winston mess around. Poppa’s House is staging a New Girl reunion for Damon Wayans Jr. and Lamorne Morris in an episode set to air in February 2025. The episode will also feature an In Living Color reunion for Damon Wayans and Tommy Davidson. Following the Poppa’s House series premiere on Monday, October 21, Wayans opened up to TV Insider about what to expect when Morris guest stars on the new sitcom. He says that while the new characters are different, Coach and Winston’s dynamic will naturally come out. As previously announced, Morris will play Todd in a February episode of Poppa’s House. Todd is a friend from Junior’s (Wayans Jr.) film school who tries to convince Junior to come back to filmmaking. As established in the series premiere, Junior is a brilliant dreamer who’s struggling to get his directing career off the ground.

Essence Atkins said the opportunity to star in CBS’ new sitcom “Poppa’s House” alongside Damon Wayans Sr. completed her nearly 30-year-long career working with the iconic Wayans family.

“It was Damon. I never worked with Senior before; I worked with [Damon Wayans] Junior on ‘Dance Flick.’ I had worked with basically with the entire [first] generation,” Atkins told TheWrap of her decision to sign on for the series. “Like, everybody but Damon, who is iconic and amazing and has done such incredible pioneering work in the realm of comedy, and so I just felt like he was my last frontier in this family. I was like, ‘I got to work with Damon.'”

When Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr. came together for CBS’ new sitcom Poppa’s House, you knew the comedy was in good hands. Playing father and son both onscreen and off, their chemistry is magnetic right from the start.

Poppa is a legendary radio host adjusting to changes at the station where he’s worked for decades. Now in his later years, the higher-ups pair him with a new co-host named Ivy in hopes she can breathe new life into the show. Yet Poppa’s not too keen on shaking up such a successful formula.

Next door resides Poppa’s son Junior, still chasing his dreams of filmmaking while also helping care for his own young family. Living in close proximity allows Poppa ample opportunity to offer guidance, whether Junior wants it or not.

But the comedy truly soars thanks to the talent and history of the entire Wayans clan involved.

Sitcoms are back! Well, not really. But NBC and CBS are partying like it’s 1994 this fall and rolling out a pair of old-fashioned situation comedies that would’ve fit right in on a primetime schedule three decades ago: NBC’s Happy’s Place (premiering Friday at 8/7c), starring Reba McEntire; and CBS’ Poppa’s House (premiering Monday at 8:30 pm), pairing up Damon Wayans with his son Damon Wayans Jr. Both shows feature seasoned sitcom veterans cracking jokes in multi-cam yukfests… but unfortunately, both seem to be sorely lacking in the laughs department.

Premiering October 21, Poppa’s House tracks legendary talk radio host and happily divorced Poppa (Wayans Sr.) who has his point of view challenged as he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband. Davidson and Morris will guest star in an episode premiering in February, according to Deadline. Morris will play a character named Todd in the February episode. In an episode planned for February, Morris — who starred opposite Wayans, Jr. on New Girl — will play Todd, a buddy from film school who tries to cajole Wayans, Jr’s character into coming back to the magical world of filmmaking.

In the same episode, Davidson — who worked with the senior Wayans on In Living Color — will play Jarnold, Poppa’s (Wayans) work acquaintance who he’s ridden with in the elevator for years. They don’t know much about each other, except that they have a great rapport in the elevator, teasing other office workers.

For decades, CBS was known as the “Tiffany Network.” Now, CBS president/chief marketing officer Mike Benson is ready to “break some Tiffany glass.”

The exec, who has been giving CBS a modern image overhaul since taking over in 2019, has now turned his attention to its comedy brand. Timed to the fall launch of the Eye network’s four comedies, Benson has introduced the campaign “You’re Laughing at CBS.”

“People will say that CBS is old and stodgy, but actually, if you look at our programming, it’s really not,” Benson said. “I think we’ve got a lot of work to do, from a brand perspective, to show that we can have a lot of fun. That we are willing to poke fun at ourselves as much as we want people to come in and laugh at the shows that we’ve got.”

Jeremy Allen White won the lead comedy actor Emmy on Sunday, recognizing his portrayal of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in Season 2 of FX’s “The Bear.” This is his second season in a row taking home the award.

“My heart is just beating right out of its chest,” White said upon taking the stage, accepting the trophy from “TV dad” presenters Damon Wayans, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and George Lopez. “Thank you, thank you to the Academy, my fellow nominees. I’m so honored to be in your company.”

“The Bear” star then turned his gratitude to “The Bear” heads Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo, as well as his co-stars. “Thank you for choosing me. I am so, so, so lucky. I’m so grateful. Thank you. My beautiful cast, I love you forever. I love to work with you, and I want us to be in each other’s lives forever.

For the second time this year, Hollywood gathered to honor TV’s biggest stars.

After the 2023 ceremony was delayed to January 2024 by last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s biggest stars gathered at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to announce the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach once again won lead actor and supporting actor in a comedy, and co-star Colón-Zayas also won her first Emmy in the supporting actress race. “Hacks” star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” won outstanding comedy over “The Bear,” which many believed to be the frontrunner.

One of Emmy’s favorite drama series will be reuniting several cast members for Sunday’s ceremony on ABC. Producers and the network announced that “The West Wing” stars Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Dule Hill and Jimmy Smits will take the stage just before the show’s 25th anniversary in downtown Los Angeles.
