Warner Bros.The acclaimed Jackie Robinson biopic 42, from Warner Home Video, debuted at No. 1 on both national home video sales charts the week ending July 21, easily beating two other new releases.
Sony Pictures’ Evil Dead remake bowed at No. 2 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined. And Bullet to the Head, another Warners release, debuted at No. 3, also on both charts.
42 grossed $95 million in U.S. theaters and broke the record for the strongest theatrical weekend opening by a baseball movie, a record set in 2006 by The Benchwarmers.
Evil Dead, a remake of the 1981 horror classic by director Sam Raimi, was panned by critics but still managed to earn a respectable $54.2 million at the box office. The film sold 45.2 percent as many copies on disc its first week in stores as 42, but 66.5 percent as many Blu-ray copies — which isn’t surprising given that 50 percent of its unit sales came from the Blu-ray Disc version in contrast to 34 percent for 42.
Bullet to the Head, an actioner starring an aging Sylvester Stallone, earned just $9.5 million in theaters and, on disc, sold 25.3 percent as many units overall as 42.
Lionsgate’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, the latest from Tyler Perry, slipped to No. 4 on First Alert after debuting at No. 1 the prior week.
Universal’s The Host, the top-selling Blu-ray Disc the previous week, dropped all the way down to No. 6 on the July 21 Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
Evil Dead, the only one of the three new releases to be distributed to all rental outlets by street date, debuted at No. 3 on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week. The No. 1 rental was Warners’ Jack the Giant Slayer, finally off its 28-day holdback from Netflix and Redbox, while the No. 2 spot went to Universal’s Identity Thief, which topped the rental chart the prior week.
