KAPOLEI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The holes are dug and now concrete is being poured on the Honolulu rail transit line.

Construction workers have started pouring the concrete on the foundations that will hold the rail columns. Each shaft takes four truckloads of concrete that will take seven days to cure. Then in two weeks they will build the columns that will hold the train tracks.

Kiewit Infrastructure West and the City are starting construction in the farmlands of Kapolei because that's the first spot they were permitted. It's also easier to work and preferred by crews.

"One advantage to working out in this area gives us a chance to get our construction techniques down. As we get closer to town obviously there is going to be more difficulty working in a populated area so I think this gives us a chance to get the kinks out," said Scott Ishikawa, Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation Spokesman.

There will be 112 columns from East Kapolei to Ewa. Crews expect to have 50 built within six months.

That's about the time we'll know if the project received the full $1.55 billion in federal money and prevailed in a lawsuit and the withstood the mayoral race.
