The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working with Malaysia since it became independent in 1963. The Malaysia portfolio is managed from GIZ’s Bangkok office in Thailand.
Malaysia, an emerging economy, has evolved from a recipient to a donor of development assistance. Economic growth has led to high greenhouse gas emissions, so Malaysia faces the challenge of adapting to the impacts of climate change.
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ has been establishing a trilateral cooperation programme since 2012 and, within this framework, works with Malaysia on implementing development projects in other countries in the region. Capacity building in the fisheries sector in Timor-Leste is one example.
In addition, GIZ is represented on the Board of Directors of the German-Malaysian Institute, a hub for advanced skills training, which received support from BMZ until around 10 years ago and is now fully funded and managed by Malaysia.
GIZ is implementing various regional programmes with project elements in Malaysia, including measures to promote energy efficiency and reduce overland transport emissions in ASEAN countries. Other activities focus on promoting the agrifood sector.
