Born Edward Lincoln Parsons, Jr. on November 29, 1946, in Lewiston, Maine, the eldest of four children of the late Edward L. Parsons (1917-2008) and Doris W. Parsons. Grew up in Brunswick, Maine, attending local elementary and secondary schools, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (BSME '69) and Northeastern University (MSME '76). Professional career in mechanical engineering included positions at General Electric, Caterpillar and the U.S. Department of Energy.
