US Congressman, US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He was elected to represent Massachusetts’ 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1793 to 1795. He was the elected as a Senator from Massachusetts in the United States Senate, serving from 1799 to 1800, when he resigned to accept a Cabinet appointment in the administration of President John Adams. He served as Secretary of War in 1800 and as Secretary of the Treasury in 1801. He unsuccessfully ran for Massachusetts Governor in 1816, shortly before he died.
