70's England is in full swing as three outcast friends find themselves drinking, joking, fighting, and chasing girls, while dreaming of escape from their blue-collar hometown of Cemetery Junction. Freddie (Christian Cooke) is a salesman suddenly thrown onto the fast track when he gains the attention of his boss, Mr. Kendrick (Ralph Fiennes). Torn between a prior life of partying with his friends (Tom Hughes and Jack Doolan) and the promise of a brighter future, life gets more complicated when the boss' daughter becomes the focus of Freddie's affection. Unassuming bomb, or how a rebel without a cause becomes a rebel with a cause. Cemetery Junction is not a very hilarious comedy, there are moments that it’s actually a very sad film, almost mournful, in fact, but it left me with a pleasant feeling, something that hadn’t happened in a long time. In a nutshell, a great surprise and a very nice film. ()
The film wasn’t that amusing, and the three leads were really punch-worthy. What really worked for me was the Taylor family, the relationships were perfect, and I simply love Ricky Gervais. Otherwise it was predictable, clichéd and not very funny. 3*- ()
In my opinion, the best film so far that the indefatigable British comedian Ricky Gervais has had anything to do with. Yet Cemetery Junction is not a comedy. It's actually an intimate drama interspersed with good jokes, full of excellent dialogue, a retro atmosphere, tastefully chosen songs and likeable actors. At certain moments (especially the Winners' Ball and the retirement of a deserving employee), bitter humor comes into play, while at other times the film tugs at your emotions (the romantic storyline) and conscience (Ralph Fiennes, the relationship between Bruce and his father)... And all of it is good. Tonight I was in the mood for exactly that - I needed something to entertain and move me at the same time. The task was accomplished to perfection. ()
