It's the summer of 1965, and a backwoods Alabama boy named Peejoe -short for Peter Joseph-is about to get a fast education in grown-up matters like freedom. The catalyst will be the most unlikely of sources-his glamorous, eccentric Aunt Lucille, who escapes from the clutches of her abusive husband and takes off for Hollywood to pursue her dreams of TV stardom. I didn’t know what to expect when Antonio Banderas stepped into the director’s chair, but I wasn’t counting on anything too artistic. This film is all about life—how we all wish we could change something, or maybe everything, and how tough life was in rural America in the 60s. Honestly, I found the movie really charming, and despite the heavy themes, it felt surprisingly positive. In the end, karma’s a thing, so why shouldn’t a film like this end the way it does? ()
