Interesting potential for the future, when the material might start to be taken a little more seriously and not just for the video store shelves. This time there’s a mixture of enthusiasm and sadness. Enthusiasm for a great cast that goes full throttle in their roles and solid action with a good portion of blood. Kevin Costner deserves extra credit, as he sets his sights on creating a new action hero, one that is confused, vulgar and unpredictable, devoid of emotion and values. He had a great time and I want to see him in the sequel. Sadness then from the generic script and the trivial build-up. They copy a lot of interesting trademarks from films from the previous few years (especially Self/Less), but in a very crass way. So far so B, but give it to someone like John Hillcoat and he'll flesh it out to the point where we'll want a trilogy. ()
If they cut out that terrible nonsense about transferring memories from one person to another and how it changes personality, it would be at least an average film, but probably even better. A gritty thriller with a great Kevin Costner in an excellent ambivalent role. That's how it turned into a ridiculous mess right from the start, which doesn't have nearly the momentum of something like Face/Off, where a similarly crazy premise actually works. ()
A very substandard genre film with a very good, but rather useless, cast. The idea wasn't downright bad, but the execution was bad enough. Throwing in a few good and well-known acting names won't make it a good movie. The action scenes were quite good, but nothing else left an impression on me... 2.5/5 ()
They shove the remnants of CIA agent Ryan Reynolds, tortured in action and leaving behind a wife and a hungry throat, into psychopathic tormentor Kevin Costner, who has a chunk of empty space in his brain. Then there's some hacker and a wonderful cast with Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones, plus a lesser-known evil villain with a likeable motive to rid the world governments and finally bring order. A plot straight from the 1990s with fine action and a rampaging protagonist who doesn't hesitate to bash someone's head in with a lamp and massacre football fans for a means of transportation. A nicely paced old-fashioned story that can't be taken seriously, but will please fans of the good old days of The Rock or Face Off. ()
One of the most pathetic action movies in recent years. Excellent cast which, however, fails to live up to its potential. In fact, the vast majority of acting performances are downright embarrassing and sloppy. Zero suspense, lame action, terrible dialogues, nonsensical story. I could go on indefinitely. I really regret the time I sacrificed to watch this piece of crap, and I strongly advise against watching this movie. ()
