Looking for my review of Nemo. I gave it five stars once and now they're gone. But what the hell, such a great cartoon deserves me giving it full marks several times. It's classic Pixar fun for all, with a balanced combination of humor, action and emotion, an imaginative story and of course (still) excellent animation. Moreover, it is one of those films that I always watch with a perfect Czech dubbing, despite the more than tempting original version. ()
Pixar has a knack for making movies for all people of any nationality, age, and gender. Finding Nemo is just such a movie. It will awaken in you the love of fish small and large. It can make you laugh, but it can also make you cry. The story of a clownfish named Marlin looking for his young son, Nemo, hides an incredible string of surprises, jokes, and emotions. The journey from the coral reef to Sydney leads through a lot of breathtaking obstacles and even more sea creatures, each of which is unique. Whether they’re sharks, turtles, or gulls, they all have an irreplaceable place in the story. Thomas Newman's excellent music adds depth to all this and fits beautifully into the blue world beneath the surface. And the animation is the proverbial icing on the cake that makes you watch and marvel at the precision of every detail. All we have to do is put this DVD/VHS in the player and go on a long pilgrimage, getting carried away by a stream of good fun, together with Marlin, Dory, Nemo, Bruce, Gill, Star, Nigel, Crasher and many others. "Fish are friends, not food." ()
The animation is breathtaking, the story is brilliantly conceived, touching and funny, the screenwriter deserves praise. Toy Story, Monsters inc. and now this, better and better. If this keeps up, I'm almost scared to think what else we'll get from Pixar. You'll see for yourself, but I can't help but share a few moments. During the scene when the little girl Dorla, the terror of aquarium fish, goes to get Nemo, the motif from Psycho is clearly audible and I couldn't help smiling at the great idea. I also loved the seagulls, who, although they only flash by for a few seconds, make you burst out laughing with their comic performance. And catching a school of fish, a matter of everyday life, will strike you as an extremely horrible thing, and I thought of Spielberg's Amistad and the blacks crammed in the hold. I know, kind of a weird analogy, but it felt that way, and Pixar has a great way of putting it. ()
When I need to reach for a reliable emotional explosion or, on the contrary, a relaxed and funny family comedy, I know that I can rely on Finding Nemo even after a million viewings. The first thing that guarantees it is Thomas Newman's music and the touching story about finding oneself, performed by a father and son. The second one, Dory and the other perfect jokers (especially Bloat, the gang of seagulls, or the imitation commando), provide me with that. After the fading of several waves of the main boom, Nemo has also become an immortal classic thanks to its timeless animation. ()
