MR. TURNER on Mike Leigh'n elokuva brittiläisen maisemamaalarin J.M.W. Koko tarinan ajan Turner on taloudenhoitajansa Hannahin järkkymättömän rakkauden kohde, vaikka Turner on usein häntä kohtaan täysin välinpitämätön. Turner oli aikakaudellaan mielipiteitä jakava edelläkävijä, jota pidetään nykyään yhtenä Britannian historian merkittävimmistä kuvataiteilijoista. Elokuvan nimiroolissa nähtävä Timothy Spall palkittiin Cannesin elokuvajuhlilla parhaana miesnäyttelijänä. (SF Film Fin.)

An old-fashioned grumbling action movie with a cute sentimental undertone by an artist who is slowly leaving the beloved and misunderstood world. It is brilliant to build two and a half hours of biography about the character of a painter who tore down forms, but otherwise most of the time just grumbled angrily and sometimes hated his hard-working colleagues, and Leigh sticks to it consistently until the end. In addition, Mr. Turner's film is extremely funny and contagiously bile to the characters that Turner hates. But that doesn't mean that all the scenes are as sparkling as, for example, the circling of the camera and Turner around the gallery. The film sometimes falls a little too much into its temperament. But Timothy will make sure you never fall sleep and miss anything. His weirdo, who uses only the screen to stir up emotions, on which he pants like a horse and applies leftovers from lunch, is simply touching. I can't help but see a piece of Leigh's autobiography in it. With its emphasis on backlight and red light, the visual is beautiful, but not mannerist. The sun is a god and the light a mystery. Humph. It’s pretty damn hard to make a biopic and make it in a way that makes it interesting and original. Mr. Turner isn’t original at all, but it’s as historically accurate as a book. And on top of that Timothy Spall, whom I know as Wormtail from Harry Potter, proves in this film just what good an actor he can be. Unfortunately, historical accuracy and a solid acting performance still don’t guarantee a good movie experience. You see the problem is that this movie is so historically accurate that it gets brutally boring at times. ()
It's definitely not a film that makes you jump in the air with excitement. Timothy Spall basically has one expression in the entire movie, but that's part of his performance, which is admirable. The whole film lacks intense moments because it's all presented at one pace, but still, the life of the painter Turner is interesting. ()
