GRAVE ENCOUNTERS was a found-footage horror phenomenon that many people believed was just a movie. Film student Alex Wright is out to prove them wrong in GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2. Alex is as obsessed with the first film, as the 20 million people who viewed its viral trailer on YouTube. While he and his friends research the events and visit the real psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film, they find themselves face-to-face with unspeakable evil, banking on the hope that their knowledge of the original film will help them survive the sequel. The plot structure of self-references (though I wouldn’t say the first Grave Encounters needed any) wouldn’t be a bad idea in itself (Tom Six did something similar between the first and second Human Centipede), if everything wasn’t so stupid! The changes in the behaviour of the characters come out of nowhere (it’s interesting how stupid the last twist is, besides predictable), and the whole third act (from the moment an old friend shows up) feels so mixed up that for a moment I wondered whether the filmmakers intentionally hadn’t crossed the boundary into sophisticated self-parody – they capture a ghost on video, really! But no, they didn’t. The atmosphere and jump-scares were better in the first one. I rated that one as fine, this one is almost-fine. 5/10 ()
Grave Encounters 2 has the advantage that, even though you expect them, there are quite good, scary, and especially startling scenes that will still have the right effect on the viewer. Moreover, there are even more supernatural elements added to it, which enhances the film. Considering these elements and what was described earlier, I would rate the second installment similarly to the first one. There are weak points and repetitions here, but in the realm of found footage, this is something that still resonates slightly above average. ()
