Plots(1)

The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. Funny, heartwarming and visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. (Universal Pictures UK)

English I, the biggest fan of the Grinch led by Jim Carrey from 2000, am of course disappointed, especially when it comes to the storyline. It bothered me that the fates of the Grinch and Cindy weren't intertwined at all, and everyone seemed to have their own piece of the story there, so the finale didn't come off as emotionally impactful. What bothered me even more was that the Grinch wasn't nearly as nasty and grumpy as we are used to seeing him. Of course, from an animation standpoint, it was very cute, the details were amazing, and I would love to live in Whoville every Christmas, even Max's character pleased me quite a bit, but my old good Grinch just wasn't there, so when decorating the Christmas tree, my mom and I will watch the one with Jim again. English The new version of Grinch caught me completely unprepared. I haven't seen the most famous old version in America, Carrey's a few times yes, but it doesn't stand high with me. I have a variable relationship with Illumination, I can stand Despicable Me, I can't stand Pets, so I approached it really cautiously and without any expectations. And then, due to its harmlessness, playfulness, and the thousand times repeated moral lesson, it completely crushed me. And suddenly it was over and I just stared blankly - thank God I'm not alone in this. I would like a sequel, but I have no idea what it would be about. PS: Although I know the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch intimately, it's not recognizable here, and for half an hour I thought they could easily have saved some money and had someone less known dub it. Then it occurred to me that maybe that's the magic. ()

English The familiar sound comes from the throat of a burrow, and through it, the solitary figure from the mountain speaks again. However, this one has no interest in crawling through gold; his goal is to ruin Christmas for all the poor souls around him. Geisel’s furry character holds nothing sacred as the end of Advent approaches; there is hustle and commerce everywhere. I have a certain sympathy for you, Mr. Grinch. Yet it is crystal clear that repentance will come, and before Christmas Eve reaches its end, the spoilsport will make amends. His heart has grown, no longer weighed down by gnawing loneliness; at the laid table among friends, we see a softened figure... This green anti-Christmas agent didn’t manage to disappoint in any notable way, perhaps because there was no singing involved. ()

English The latest adaptation of the story about the green, hairy grump who didn't really like Christmas differs in many ways from the 2000 feature version starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch (I haven't seen the first 1966 film yet). It's definitely more for children and tries perhaps a little too blatantly to moralise the younger audience, which was also the case in the feature film, but the latter was darker. What I missed a bit was the illumination of the Grinch's origins, which were handled quite nicely in the 2000 film. I could go on comparing like this, but I don't really want to do. The new Grinch is certainly not lacking in pretty and colorful visuals. The funniest characters were definitely the animals – Max and Fred really rocked – if it weren't for them, you wouldn't even laugh much. While the film is primarily aimed at children, the message that Christmas is not about presents and money, but about values beyond the material world, is appropriate for all. ()

English A delightful animated tale that captures Grinch's classic grumpiness, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. It often reminded me of the live-action version with Jim Carrey, which I still find better, more charming, and funnier. While this version is enjoyable, I could have done without the numerous scenes set to hip-hop music. ()
