A brisk survival film that was certainly in the rank of grittier and more daring films in its time, as evidenced by the bans in some countries. The model is a variation on “Lord of the Flies”, where a group of people on an island get separated. The larger group is ruled by a despotic leader whom the smaller group wants to eliminate. The problem is that these are criminals originally sentenced either to death or life in prison, which makes it harder to root for some of them. Of course, there are bigger bastards among them, so you can sympathize with some of them. In truth, though, I almost didn't care who kicked the bucket. In terms of execution, the film is good, it has decent visuals, the island locations create a great environment to fight for your life. The gore isn't shocking, but it's quite realistic and adds to the overall dirtiness. Perhaps the funniest part in an otherwise bleak film is the honey and bare ass scene. Recommended especially to genre fans. ()
