I'm used to serious-themed films from Eastwood, but he surprised me with a movie that takes a lighter approach. Although it’s a film from 2000, at times while watching it, I honestly felt like I had been transported back to the 80s. I experienced a rather nostalgic atmosphere, and I’m very happy about that. If someone other than a master of his craft had taken on the direction, it could have been a disaster, but Eastwood kept it in check and even delivered witty one-liners as the main character. The cast is truly the main attraction, and it was one of the reasons I chose to watch this film. Even the effects weren’t bad, and the space sequences really caught my attention. The film loses a bit when it shifts from comedy to seriousness, but aside from the ending, there aren’t many of those moments. After a long time, this was an excellent way to unwind. Sometimes you just need that. I give it 76%. ()
Space cowboys, who have everything hanging perilously low except their pistols, can be divided into two hemispheres. The recruitment associated with training comes through its rivalry with humor (Sutherland rules, ready to pick up a discarded shuttle tank just because it's feminine), and then comes the cosmic action featuring the taming of a six-shooter made in the USSR, which refuses to avoid clichés (it's clear who will break their match before a suicide mission), and you, with the autopilot of perception switched on, wonder how to knock out the flight director's porcelain teeth so he can more easily pull that gum from his mouth. The two halves don't mesh well, but Sutherland's blind snake Jerry doesn't care at all and would invite them for oysters. ()
It was a pleasure to watch the four leading actors enjoying themselves, but much more humorous situations could have been squeezed out of the old guys' participation in the difficult astronaut training, and there was no room for them in the serious second half. The last act looks like a survival drama, but the final shot on the surface of the moon proves that Eastwood didn't take it that seriously. ()
Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner prove that they aren’t yet ready for the scrap yard. Great acting performances and perfect humor carry you through the movie without a moment for boredom. Of course, Clint proves that he is still cool and the camera (which he himself was directing) focused on him the most, although I much preferred the character Hawk, played by Tommy Lee Jones. ()
