What is an FTR file?

An FTR file is a file type rules file used by the Silicon Graphics IRIX operating system. It contains a list of rules that describe how IRIX shows different file types, as well as what functions users can perform on those files.

More Information

IRIX is a discontinued operating system that was used on Silicon Graphics workstations and servers. Silicon Graphics released the first version of IRIX in 1988 and the last in 2006.

IRIX uses several types of system files, including FTR files, to determine how it handles different file types. Each FTR file can contain one or more file type rules, which:

  • Name a file type (the TYPE declaration)
  • Describe how IRIX should identify files of that type (the MATCH declaration)
  • Define what options users are given when interacting with a file of that type (e.g. the CMD OPEN declaration, which determines what happens when a user double-clicks a matching file)

Additional FTR settings allow users to describe the named file type (LEGEND) and specify what icon(s) it uses (ICON).

How to open an FTR file

Because FTR files are plain text files, you can open and edit them in any text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows) or Apple TextEdit (Mac).
