It is with great sadness that the club has learnt of the passing of long-term supporter and club volunteer, Adam King. Adam will be well known to many of our supporters, having followed the Seasiders for over 25 years. Indeed, Adam was often the first person that many supporters and visitors would have seen when they arrived at the Bowl, as he volunteered for many years at the club, first selling programmes and making up part of a double act with our inimitable turnstile operator Len, and then taking over as gateman himself for almost 15 years. Adam was a stalwart of the club in that time, rarely missing a match for many of those years.
As well as volunteering at the ground Adam was a keen supporter of the club and was a key member of the group of supporters who took residence in the Bus Shelter and created such a noisy and supportive atmosphere at the ground in the 2000’s and 2010s.
Adam’s role in the Bus Shelter was usually limited to second half support as he would be on duty on the gate until late in the first half. He would then make his way round the ground, usually with a burger and drink in hand, more often than not finding himself serenaded by the Bus Shelter as he approached the stand, the game temporarily forgotten. In fact there was often a sense of disappointment if Adam managed to sneak into the stand unnoticed and without receiving his song!
As well as supporting Clacton Town and then FC Clacton, Adam was also a big Liverpool fan. He worked for many years for the NHS in Clacton before moving to Dorset to be closer to his family in the summer of 2022. We were saddened to hear of Adam’s passing after a period of ill health, and we pass on our condolences to all of his family and friends.
Former Clacton Town matchday programme editor and current FC Clacton statistician Karl Fuller was saddened to hear the news of Adam’s passing and described him as a man who loved his football dearly and at the forefront of much of that passion was the Seasiders. He added:
“Adam introduced me to Clacton Town back in the 1990’s. As someone who only watched the game at the professional level, he helped me to see what a much better game football was at grass roots level. We would go to the Bowl after work on a Tuesday night and enjoy the evening games especially, and then we would go away a lot.
“I remember after an evening away game at Cornard we stopped at a pub on the way home. A girl in the pub overheard us talking about football and asked who we supported. I told her I was an Ipswich fan, and Adam responded that he was a Clacton fan. She asked him who his proper team was. He repeated Clacton. She could not understand. His passion for his local team was real.
“Yes, he would often go to Anfield to watch his beloved Liverpool, and he would enjoy coming to watch Ipswich with me. But Clacton was his true love. We stood in the Bus Shelter many times together and had some great songs that all the lads in there would join in with. Watching Clacton win the First Division Knockout Cup at Hadleigh in 2010 with Adam was a memory I will cherish forever.
“Away from football, I worked with him for over 27 years, and he was an Usher at my wedding in 2002. He was one of my best mates, both in football and in general life. My thoughts and condolences go out to his mum, sister, and the rest of his family. Rest in peace mate.”
Like Karl, we will all remember Adam fondly, and as a club we pass on our condolences and best wishes to all who had the pleasure of knowing and spending time with him.
“Once a Seasider, always a Seasider.”
Rest in peace, Adam.
