uvula (n.)
fleshy tissue hanging from the middle of the soft palate, late 14c. (Lanfranc), from Late Latin uvula, from Latin uvola "small bunch of grapes," diminutive of uva "grape." So called from fancied resemblance of the organ to small grapes. Related: Uvular; uvulitis; uvulotomy.
In Watkins the Latin word is derived from a PIE root ōg- "fruit, berry." De Vaan compares it to tree-names in Greek, Germanic, Balto-Slavic, Armenian, but with phonetic difficulties, and writes that this, "in combination with the semantic field of tree names, may point to a loanword from a non-IE language."
