Profile

Gary Armstrong

Gary Armstrong was a scrum-half who played 51 times for Scotland during an eleven year period beginning in 1988.

He made his debut against Australia in Murrayfield, a game the Scots lost 32-12, and he went on to captain his country. He led his side to the 1999 Five Nations title and retired later that year after the World Cup.

He could have won more than his 51 caps but for two serious knee injuries and competition from Andy Nicol and Brian Redpath. He started his club career at Jed-Forrest RFC before he moved south to play for Newcastle Falcons. He finished his career with the now defunct Borders before retiring in 1996.
