Emergency Psychiatry is the clinical application of psychiatry in emergency settings. Conditions requiring psychiatric interventions may include attempted suicide, substance abuse, depression, psychosis, violence or other rapid changes in behavior. The American Association for Emergency Psychiatry (AAEP) — proud home of the annual National Update on
Behavioral Emergencies conference — sponsors educational programs and provides a network of experts to address clinical, educational, administrative, research and legal programs for the diverse disciplines involved in emergency psychiatry. The AAEP is a multidisciplinary organization that serves as the voice of emergency mental health. The membership includes directors of psychiatric emergency services and emergency departments, psychiatrists, emergency physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physician assistants, educators and other professionals involved in emergency psychiatry.

Mission Statement:

We are champions for the advancement of evidence based, compassionate care for behavioral emergencies through research, education, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Journal of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry

Emergency Psychiatry is intended to be a forum for the exchange of multidisciplinary ideas. Manuscripts are welcomed that deal with the interfaces of emergency psychiatry. This includes psychiatric evaluation of individuals in the emergency room setting, education and training in the field and research into causes, and treatment of behavioral problems. Manuscripts are evaluated for style, clarity, consistency, and suitability.

All articles represent the opinions of the authors and not those of the Association. Except where specifically stated, published articles are not official statements of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry.

Manuscripts are considered for publication with the understanding that their essential substance has not been published previously and has not been submitted simultaneously to other publications.
