Dagstuhl Publishing

Dagstuhl's central task is to enable and promote communication between researchers in computer science. Besides the traditional seminar offerings, which focus on personal exchange, affordable open access publication services for high-quality research are another integral and important part of Schloss Dagstuhl's efforts.

As conference publications play a special role in computer science, Dagstuhl's publication services are mostly concentrated on conference proceedings. With LIPIcs and OASIcs, two strong and successful series have been established for this purpose. Dagstuhl's publication portfolio is quite a bit broader and is described in detail below.

As a member of the Leibniz Association, Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH is committed to Open Access. For details on the implementation, see our Open Access Policy.

Our Services

Publication Server DROPS. All documents published by Dagstuhl Publishing are offered free of charge via the Dagstuhl Research Online Publication Server (DROPS). All the requisite metadata on each publication is administered in accordance with general guidelines pertaining to online publications (cf. Dublin Core). This enables the online publications to be authorized for citation and made accessible to a wide readership on a permanent basis. Access is free of charge for readers following the open access idea which fosters unimpeded access to scientific publications.

High-Quality Metadata. We offer rich and excellently structured metadata for all our publications which we also pass on to our DOI provider (DataCite) and indexing services (e.g. dblp). Please check our metadata export interface.

Persistent identifiers. All our publications receive a DOI and a URN as persistent identifiers to ensure secure and permanent referencing.

Indexing. All publications on DROPS are indexed in the dblp computer science bibliography. The volumes of our proceedings series, LIPIcs and OASIcs, are submitted to Scopus, where they are regularly indexed. The LIPIcs and OASIcs series as well as the journal LITES are also listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). The technical interface of our publication server enables harvesting according to the Google Scholar guidelines. Google Scholar regularly retrieves metadata and full texts from our server.

Long-term Archiving. All publications are submitted to the German National Library (DNB) for (digital) long-term archiving.

History

Some minimal forms of publishing have been part of the Dagstuhl mission since its inception in 1990. Reports about Dagstuhl Seminars have always been generated and published, originally as an printed in-house report series. Later, in 2004, the DROPS publication server was established, which allowed to publish and access these reports electronically.

In 2008, Dagstuhl ventured into open access publishing of computer science research work. This was a natural extension of Dagstuhl’s efforts of facilitating research communication. Moreover, due to its reputation within computer science and its relative independence as an institution, Dagstuhl was in a good position for helping to establish open access publishing within computer science. At that time, open access for all to research results had just been established as an explicit goal and was voiced by many research organizations (see the “Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities”).  In the meantime, open access publishing has become a general political goal.
