Bray Jazz Festival Celebrated US jazz pianist Ethan Iverson plays Bray Jazz Festival

Ethan Iverson Trio (US)

Mermaid Arts Centre, 2.30pm, Saturday 4th May

With Sean Carpio (drums) & Jeppe Skovbakke (bass)

‘A passionate dynamo at the crossroads of jazz and classical music’ (DownBeat), pianist, bandleader, and composer Ethan Iverson is one of the big stars of US jazz piano.

Founder member of ‘The Bad Plus,’ the innovative trio renowned for their freewheeling originals and masterful deconstruction of rock and pop tunes, Ethan Iverson signed to Blue Note records in 2022, and released a masterful debut ‘Every Note is True’ on the legendary label that year.

Just last month he released his second Blue Note recording, ‘Technically Acceptable,’ which includes a set of striking new originals together with interpretations of Roberta Flack’s ‘Killing Me Softly” and Thelonious Monk’s ‘Round Midnight.’

A former student of piano master Fred Hersch, Iverson has lent his considerable talents to projects with Billy Hart, Dewey Redman, Charlie Hayden and Kurt Rosenwinkel amongst others. He is joined for this once-off European date in Bray by Ireland’s foremost drummer Sean Carpio, and Danish bassist Jeppe Skovbakke, with whom Carpio has worked closely for close to 20 years.

In addition to his work as an artist, Iverson has established a reputation as one of the most learned and articulate jazz scholars on the scene, writing the celebrated jazz and music blog Do The Math.

“(Iverson’s) Technically Accepted is an album so loaded with invention and cool it rises instantly to the pack of hands-down favorites for 2024.”
