Mike Marsh has stepped down from his role as interim boss at Preston North End after two matches in charge.

The 55-year-old followed up Tuesday's Carabao Cup victory over Sunderland with a 3-0 defeat at Swansea City in the Championship on Saturday.

Ryan Lowe departed by mutual consent after Preston's opening-day defeat at home to Sheffield United.

Along with assistants Peter Murphy and Ched Evans, Marsh was put in temporary charge for the matches against Sunderland and Swansea.

But the club now say that Marsh did not wish to apply for the job on a more permanent basis.

"Mike has thanked the club for the opportunity to take interim charge, but he does not wish to apply for the job on a permanent basis or take the club forward," Preston chairman Peter Ridsdale wrote in a statement on the club's website., external

"Mike will therefore leave the club with our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.

"We will now concentrate all our time and energy on appointing a new manager/head coach, and hope to be in a position to make an announcement in the coming days."

Preston next play against Luton Town at Deepdale on Saturday.
