People are being warned to be aware of the law around e-scooters in the run-up to Christmas.

There were 29 injuries locally involving the vehicles and 11 riders were killed across the UK in 2023, Humberside Police said.

Use of private scooters on public spaces is illegal as the area is not part of a government-approved rental trial and can only be ridden on private land with the landowner's permission.

The force added that e-scooters were also prohibited from being used on cycle tracks, cycle lanes on roads, or other spaces dedicated to pedal cycle use only.

Sgt Di Kemp, from the roads policing unit, said e-scooters were "subject to the same laws and regulations as motor vehicles".

"This includes the necessity of registration with the DVLA, licensing, insurance, and adherence to road traffic laws," she said.

"People who purchase and ride an e-scooter in public may not realise they are committing various offences but could risk fines and points on their driving record."
