What is Gamamari?
Gamamari is THE student media organisation at UNSW. With the launch of our new name and new editorial team, the publication has undergone a complete change to ensure that we are bringing the UNSW student community the stories that it wants and needs to hear. The publication is committed to representing and giving a voice to those who have important stories to share, those who are discovering and creating new and exciting things, and those who may otherwise go unnoticed.
Why did we change our name?
Tharunka was founded in 1953, and the first editors used an Aboriginal word that allegedly comes from a Central Australian Aboriginal Language. The word is most likely stolen and from linguistics research probably does not mean 'message stick' as the founders intended it to. Therefore, we believe based on the research conducted that a name change is necessary so that the student publication can continue to align with the values it sets out in its charter.
