Athenry twinned with Newfoundland town

The links between Ireland and Canada were celebrated in the twinning of County Galway town Athenry with Renews-Cappahayden in Newfoundland.

The twinning ceremony took place in Athenry Castle recently. Labour Galway East senator Lorraine Higgins was the Master of Ceremony. The event was also attended by Canadian Ambassador Loyola Hearn, who is from Renews-Cappahayden.

Ambassador Hearn was presented with a hurl and sliotar as a mark of the significance of the game to Athenry. His wife Maureen was presented with Antica jewellery designed in Athenry and sponsored by Centre Jewellers.

Chair of Athenry Twinning Committee Anne Joyce said: “The Committee now looks forward to building links between Athenry and Renews and exploring any possibilities that may enhance both towns both economically and culturally.”

Ireland and Canada have strong links. Many Irish people emigrated to Canada in the 19th century, particularly to Newfoundland, and many people there retain a strong Irish accent; while Ireland’s national emblem of the gold harp on the blue shield is part of the Canadian coat of arms.
