2017-18 Federal Redistribution - South Australia

Draft boundaries will be released by the Australian Electoral Commission on 13 April. Details of the proposed boundaries can be found on the AEC's South Australian redistribution website.

The boundaries were finalised on 26 June with no changes to the draft boundaries.

The Redistribution Committee has chosen to abolish Labor's safest seat in Port Adelaide. With the Committee choosing to retain the Adelaide Hills as the boundary of urban Adelaide seats, this means all of the other seats in Adelaide move north or west towards Port Adelaide.

Grey and Barker absorb the rural parts of the former seat of Wakefield, now Spence. Mayo remains a seat covering the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island seat, with the addition of areas around Aldinga from Kingston.

Wakefield has been re-named Spence in honour of Catherine Helen Spence, a wll-known 19th century campaigner for votes for women and for electoral reform.

The net impact is the abolition of a Labor seat in Port Adelaide, with the Labor seats of Adelaide, Makin, Hindmarsh and Spence all becoming safer for Labor. Labor MP for Port Adelaide Mark Butler is currently a candidate for the Labor Party presidency. Most of his former seat is now contained in Hindmarsh, held by Steve Georganas.

Christopher Pyne's seat of Sturt is largely unchanged, while the marginal Liberal seat of Boothby becomes more marginal.
