Apparatus

Hoops: wood or synthetic, 80-90 cm in diameter, with a minimum weight of 300g.

Ribbon: a 6m strip of satin attached to the cane.

Balls: made of rubber or soft plastic, with a diameter of 18-20cm, weighing 400g.

Clubs: used in pairs, the clubs are approximately 40cm long and made of wood or synthetic material, weighing 150g each.

Rope: made of hemp fibres or similar material, the length of the rope varies according to the gymnast’s height, but the apparatus has been phased out for London and Rio Olympics.

Duration

Individual competition: each gymnast performs a routine lasting between 75-90 seconds on a 13m x 13m square mat, using their choice from five apparatus available: rope, ball, hoop, ribbon or clubs.

Group competition: five gymnasts perform two routines lasting between 135-150 seconds, one with five ribbons and the other with three pairs of clubs and two hoops.

Time is of the essence: for each second under or over the time allowed, 0.05 points are lost.

Must dos

The gymnasts and their apparatus must be constantly in motion throughout the performance. The team must wear identical leotards and have their hair tied back.

Scoring

Two panels of judges evaluate the performance, one focusing on difficulty, the other on execution – the gymnast with the most points wins.
