About

About

Aim of the game

Two boxers attempt to dominate each other in a bout by landing punches on each other’s head or upper body

Why should you watch this?

Because it is arguably the purest form of one-versus-one sport – a primal challenge that requires great strength, skill, endurance, speed and intelligence

International Federation

Olympic debut

St Louis 1904

Rules
  • Jab

    Jab

A straight-arm blow, not full power, used to keep rival at bay and set up bigger shots

  • Cross

    Cross

A blow that crosses from one side to the other, more powerful than jab, can produce knock-outs

  • Uppercut

    Uppercut

A big shot rising from below to the opponent’s chin, successful execution often results in a knock-out

Duration

A men’s bout consists of three rounds of three minutes. Women contest four rounds of two minutes.

Scoring

Five judges score both fighters after each round, but scores are not revealed until the end of the bout.

A boxer receives 10 points for winning a round, while the loser gets between six and nine.

Athletes are scored on successfully landed blows, domination, competitiveness, technique, tactics and adherence to the rules.

A computer selects the scores of three of the five judges at the end of the bout – and the final score is an average of these judges’ scores.

The winner

Unless one is knocked out, stopped for their own protection or disqualified, the fighter with the most points wins.

Referee

The referee ensures well-being of boxers (has power to stop the fight) and that rules are followed. Is the one that raises hand of winner when the decision is announced.

Equipment

The gloves weight 284g, double the size of the fist. Both boxers use same model, provided by competition organisers.

Men no longer use protective headguards, but women do.

Also known as gumshield, protects teeth, the mouthpiece must not be red or pink, as this could conceal blood.
