Aim of the game

In either canoes or kayaks, athletes must complete a 250m white-water course, passing through gates and avoiding obstacles, in the shortest time possible

Why should you watch this?

High speed thrills, white-water rapids and obstacles, the tradition of canoeing is recreated on a man-made course that tests the competitors’ strength and skill to their limits

Course

The course comprises an artificial, 250m stretch of white-water.

Canoe

- Minimum 3.5m long for C1 and 4.1m for C2

- Competitors use single-blade paddles

Kayak

- Minimum 3.5m long      

- Competitors use double-blade paddles

Gates

Canoes and kayaks have to pass through 18-25 gates to complete the course. Green gates are negotiated in the direction of the current, and red gates against the current.

Penalties

Judges penalise competitors with time penalties for touching the gates (two seconds) or failing to pass through them (50 seconds).
