Archery

A fascinating test of nerve and accuracy, archery made its Olympic debut at Paris 1900, with women joining in four years later. At Rio 2016, both genders will compete in individual and team events, aiming for that perfect score.

About

About

Aim of the game

Archery has a simple but far from easy objective: to hit the bull’s eye on a target from a distance of 70m

Why should you watch this?

From Robin Hood to Legolas, there have been many iconic archers in literature and film: at the Olympic Games you can see all this skill and heroism in real life

Scoring

An archer has 40 seconds to shoot each of their six arrows at a target. In the finals, an archer has 20 seconds to shoot each of their three arrows at a target.

Scores on the target range from 10 for a bull’s eye to one for the outer ring. Competitors with the best scores after 72 arrows go through to the next stage.

The team event is contested by teams of three archers.

Equipment

The recurve bow (the only kind allowed in the Olympic Games): comprises two limbs, the handle and bowstring, as well as sighting accessories and stabiliser rods.

Arrow: the maximum arrow diameter of the arrow is 9.3mm, but most are around 5.5mm so that they travel faster (arrows can leave the bow at over 240kmh).

Target: consisting of 10 concentric circles, the target is 1.22m in diameter and positioned 1.3m above the ground.

Skills

Strength, flexibility, accuracy and a cool temperament are the main qualities needed by archers.
