Zambia: Lusaka MMD Youths Now Want Nevers Out

THE trouble-torn opposition MMD has received yet another heavy blow as youths in Lusaka Central constituency joined in the persistent demands for Nevers Mumba to leave the party.

The youth have also urged MMD national women's chairperson Catherine Namugala not to relent in the fight for a better MMD, saying youths in all provinces were behind her.

More than 100 MMD youths met at the town centre market at the weekend and resolved that Dr Mumba should leave the party to pave the way for a national convention.

Lusaka Central Constituency youth chairperson Jacob Mtonga said in a statement yesterday that the youth from seven constituencies in Lusaka felt that intra-party wrangles would end if Dr Mumba resigned.

Mr Mtonga urged Ms Namugala to continue putting up a spirited fight to bring sanity in the former ruling party.

He said the youth had since started mobilising themselves for massive demonstrations to kick out the people who were destroying the party.

"To our women's chairperson, Honourable Namugala, don't relent, all the youths in all the provinces are behind you as you fight to correct what has gone wrong in the party. Please keep the spirit.

"We the grassroots have started mobilising ourselves for massive demonstrations to kick out these people who want to destroy the MMD we enjoyed over the years," Mr Mtonga said.

He said Dr Mumba should not wait to be hounded out of office because this would dent his political career.

He said Dr Mumba was up to now not a registered president of MMD.

Mr Mtonga said the MMD youth in Lusaka were calling for a convention so that they could elect a duly registered president to stand in the 2016 elections.

Meanwhile, Mr Mtonga has advised Die Hard national coordinator Bowman Lusambo to stop accusing Ms Namugala of planning to harm him.

He said the accusations were petty because Ms Namugala was one of the party's able and hard working founder members.
